CMBS Faculty Member and Student Shine at International Biorisk Conference

Mrs. Maria Bea Lao awarded as a Poster Presentation Winner (Top 4-7) at the 17th Asia Pacific Biosafety Association (A-PBA) Annual Biorisk Conference in conjunction with the BRAP 7th Annual Convention and 5th International Forum. The College of Medical and Biological Sciences (CMBS) is proud to announce the remarkable achievements of Mrs. Maria Bea C. Lao, RMT, MSMT, CBP, IFBA-PC, and Ms. Yana Usop, who both represented our institution with distinction at the 17th Asia Pacific Biosafety Association (A-PBA) Annual Risk Biorisk Conference. The conference was held in conjunction with the Biosafety and Biosecurity Association of the Philippines (BRAP) 7th Annual Convention and 5th International Forum, and took place at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Quezon City, Philippines, from September 5-6, 2024.

Mrs. Maria Bea C. Lao, a dedicated faculty member of CMBS, was awarded a prestigious Minor Award for her research poster titled "Establishing Institutional Biosafety Committee Guidelines for a Higher Education Institution in Region XI, Philippines." Her work, which provides critical insights into the development of biosafety guidelines for higher education institutions, was recognized among the Top 7 posters out of over 40 submissions at the conference, earning her a place among the Top 4-7 poster presentations.

The award, presented on September 5, 2024, highlights Mrs. Lao's significant contribution to the field of biosafety and underscores the high caliber of research being conducted at CMBS. Her work not only sets a standard for institutional biosafety protocols in Region XI but also reinforces the college's commitment to enhancing safety standards in educational settings.

Adding to the pride of CMBS, Ms. Yana Usop, an undergraduate student under the mentorship of Mrs. Lao, also presented her research poster at the conference. Her study, titled "Institutional Biosafety Protocol Compliance and the Level of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices among Students of a Selected Medical Laboratory Science School in Davao City, Philippines," offered valuable insights into the awareness and adherence to biosafety protocols among medical laboratory science students. Ms. Usop’s research highlights the importance of education and practice in maintaining high biosafety standards in academic institutions.

The accomplishments of Mrs. Lao and Ms. Usop are a testament to CMBS’s dedication to advancing research and fostering the development of future professionals in the field of biosafety. Their success at such a prestigious international forum not only brings honor to our college but also emphasizes the critical role that CMBS plays in contributing to global biosafety and biosecurity initiatives.

Maria Bea C. Lao Selected as Contributor for Global Biorisk Research Workshop at A-PBA Biorisks Conference

We are pleased to announce that Maria Bea C. Lao, RMT, MSMT, CBP, IFBA-PC has been selected by Deloitte Consulting (formerly Gryphon) to participate in the Global Biorisk Research Agenda workshop, held from September 3-4, 2024, at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Quezon City, Philippines.

Maria Bea was one of the distinguished representatives from the research industry, academia, and biosafety sectors invited to this event, organized in conjunction with the BRAP Annual Convention. The workshop, funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, Office of the Nonproliferation and Disarmament Fund (ISN/NDF), aimed to define the evidence needs of the Biorisk Management System and shape the future of applied biosafety research globally.

Her selection reflects her strong commitment to advancing the field of biosafety and biorisk management. This global gathering of experts highlighted the need for international collaboration in addressing key challenges in biosafety and biorisk management systems.

Maria Bea connected with this incredible opportunity through the Biorisk Association of the Philippines, 2015 (BRAP 2015). We are incredibly proud of her achievement and look forward to seeing the future contributions she will make in this field.
